Textured Trinket Box
Online Woodturning Instruction

The live session has ended. Sign up and watch the video until August 31st

A box that’s designed to be used!
It holds memories, jewelry, pocket change, or treasures.
Make this box from figured wood, burl, or straight grain.

This design, with the wood grain perpendicular to the turning axis and a flat top,
shows curly figured wood at its best.
It also works well with burl, or straight grain.

Penetrating dyes highlight the figure
for a 3-dimensional look.

I will show you how to use a spiraling and texturing tool to enhance the piece with different types of texture, giving dramatic effects.

Textured Trinket Box
Textured Trinket Box open Are you confused about grain direction in your turnings? Is it side grain, or face grain?
I call it perpendicular grain!
The wood grain is oriented across the lid of the box, perpendicular to the turning axis.

Learn how the grain direction in the wood
affects how the tools cut.

See my methods for getting a good lid fit.
And we'll make a jam chuck to do the top.

Make it your own!
Use a special piece of figured wood.
Add color, beads, or texture.
Or use simple lines to show off the wood grain
