Descriptions of Presentations All of my presentations include printed handouts and discussion of design and form, finishing techniques, and signing the work. · Finial Box: In this demonstration, I show how to turn a small Box with a finial, an in-fitting lid, and an inlayed decorative ring and foot made from contrasting wood. Techniques covered include boxmaking, turning a finial, design, and material selection. Step-by-step instructions for making the project are included. (View an image of this project) · Banksia Pod Finial Box: I also do the above demo using a Banksia Pod for the box and turning the finial from contrasting wood. · Banksia Pod Inspiration: From the selection of the right pod for the project, to some of the many possibilities that Banksia Pods offer, I hope to inspire some experimentation with this unique and renewable material. I will have a display of raw Pods, and completed Banksia projects. I have a couple of different variations of this demo showing a couple of different projects each time. The demo usually includes a simple project and a box or hollow piece, possibly with stone inlay in the Pod’s seed holes. · Banksia Pod Boxes: Boxes are a more challenging Banksia Pod project. By turning two different styles of box, I show a variety of basic boxmaking techniques as well as the specifics of using Banksia Pods. (View images of some of my Banksia Pod Boxes) · Banksia Pod “Space Station” Box: A Box with a natural edge and a finial and pedestal is turned from a single Banksia Pod. This challenging Banksia Pod project covers Boxmaking, finial turning, design, and material selection. Very involved planning and layout, plus some interesting ideas and tricks. (View an image of this project) · Box with Inlay in Lid: In this demo, the box has an over-fitting lid with inlay of wood and/or stone. Basic boxmaking techniques are covered, as well as design and material selection. The emphasis in this demo is on cutting technique and creating a pleasing shape. Material selection, and chucking methods are also discussed. A step-by-step approach to putting the pieces together into the career you really want, and then pricing so that you can make a living. Detailed worksheets make the concepts easy to follow. No turning! · Hollow Forms with the Captured Bar System and Laser Measuring Device: A look at my method for turning and hollowing vessels. This presentation covers the selection and orientation of materials, design and shaping, hollowing, and reverse chucking. · Form and Finish: A look at classic forms and how to achieve pleasing designs. This presentation is a discussion of what makes a design successful, and how to make your vessel shapes come to life. · Metal working for woodworkers: (this presentation needs the use of a bandsaw, drill press, and disk or belt sander) Showing how to make your own bandsaw blades, drill and tap holes to make jigs and fixtures, and successfully cut and finish metal parts, I will try to de-mystify metalworking and bring the skills to all woodworkers with a moderately equipped shop. Sources for the tools and materials used, and a shopping list for equipping the woodworker’s metal working shop will be included.
